Description:

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) acts as both a pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine. It is secreted by T cells and macrophages and plays an essential role in the final differentiation of B-cells into Ig-secreting cells and is involved in lymphocyte and monocyte differentiation. In addition, IL-6 has been shown to be an endogenous pyrogen capable of inducing fever in people with autoimmune diseases or infections. IL-6 is produced at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, where it is secreted and signals through a cell-surface type I cytokine receptor complex consisting of the ligand-binding IL-6Rα chain (CD126), and the signal transducing component gp130 (CD130.
