Omentin-1, also known as intelectin-1 (ITLN1), is an adipokine that is regarded as a secretory protein produced by adipose tissue. ITLN1 may mediate cardiovascular protective effects and circulating ITLN1 levels can be used as a biomarker of cancers, polycystic ovary syndrome, preeclampsia, inflammatory diseases, and metabolic disorders, including diabetes and metabolic syndrome1. ITLN1 can promote inflammation in primary human adipocytes through the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and it increases insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in human adipocytes via the activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B.
