Description:

Haptoglobin binds free plasma hemoglobin released from erythrocytes with high affinity and thereby inhibits its oxidative activity. Recycling of the heme iron, prevents accumulation and damage to kidneys. The haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex will then be removed by the reticuloendothelial system (mostly the spleen). Haptoglobin is a serum protein that consists of two alpha and two beta chains connected by disulfide bridges. It acts as a hemoglobin scavenger and has been associated with protease inhibitory activity. Haptoglobin also acts as an antioxidant, has antibacterial activity and plays a role in modulating many aspects of the acute phase response.
