Description:

Haptoglobin is a serum protein that consists of two alpha and two beta chains connected by disulfide bridges. As a result of hemolysis, hemoglobin is found to accumulate in the kidney and is secreted in the urine. Haptoglobin captures, and combines with free plasma hemoglobin to allow hepatic recycling of heme iron and to prevent kidney damage. It is a positive acute phase reactant, the levels of which increase significantly in pig in response to inflammation, tissue injury or disease.
