Description:

Historically, partial proteolysis was used to dissect the functional regions of immunoglobulin molecules. Digestion of IgG with papain cleaves each heavy (H) chain at the amino-terminal side of the inter-H chain disulfide linkages, thereby releasing two antibody fragments, termed Fab and an Fc fragment, consisting of paired carboxy-terminal CH domains. The Fc fragment binds to Fc receptors on immune cells and is responsible for diverse effector functions, including antibody-dependent cytotoxicity (ADCC), opsonization, and complement fixation.
