Description:

Apolipoprotein AIV (Apo AIV), is a major component of HDL and chylomicrons, is actively synthesized in the small intestine during fat absorption and incorporated onto the surface of nascent chylomicrons that are then secreted into lymph. When these chylomicrons enter plasma, Apo-AIV dissociates from the surface and is found primarily in the lipoprotein-free fraction.

Apo AIV may play a role in the secretion and catabolism of chylomicrons and VLDL. It is required for efficient activation of lipoprotein lipase by ApoC-II and is a potent activator of LCAT. Apo AIV is an amphipathic protein that can emulsify lipids and has been linked to protective roles against cardiovascular disease and obesity.
