Description:

Ceruloplasmin, the main copper-binding protein in blood and some other fluids, is well known for its copper-dependent enzymatic functions and as a source of copper for cells. About half of ceruloplasmin is in the apo (copper-free) form. Copper is incorporated into ceruloplasmin by the copper “pump”, ATP7B, located in the transGolgi network after synthesis of the apoprotein. Apoceruloplasmin is the result not only of the release of copper from the holo form during delivery of this trace element to cells, but also from the secretion of apoceruloplasmin by hepatocytes and possibly other cells.
