Description:

S100-P is a calcium binding protein that is part of the S100 family that shares a common calcium binding motif. The structure and physical properties of the proteins suggest that they are trigger or activator proteins instead of buffer proteins like other Ca2+ binding proteins. Similar to Calmodulin, binding of a Ca2+ to the S100 proteins cause a conformational change and allows for target protein interactions. S100P was first identified and purified from human placenta. It is known to have extracellular and intracellular functions. S100P has also been implicated in many different cancers, and its expression correlates with metastasis, drug resistance and poor clinical outcomes overall. Due to it’s over expression in many cancers, S100P can be a useful biomarker in differentiating cancer cells from normal cells. S100P has been expressed in many forms of cancer such as pancreas, breast, colon, prostate and lung. As over expression of S100P has been related to poor clinical outcomes, there may be potential benefits in developing new therapeutic agents to block the function of S100P.
