Description:

CD8 (cluster of differentiation 8) is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed as CD8aa homodimer or CD8ab heterodimer. The alpha and beta isoforms are encoded by a different gene. CD8 serves as a co-receptor for the T cell receptor (TCR). Like the TCR, CD8 binds to a Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecule, specific only for the Class I MHC protein. It is predominantly expressed on the surface of cytotoxic/suppressor, peripheral T cells, but can also be found on NK cells.
