Avelumab is a fully human IgG1 anti-PD-L1 monoclonal antibody that binds to the programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and therefore inhibits binding to its receptor programmed cell death 1 (PD-1), resulting in an increased CD8+ T cell immune response. Avelumab belongs to the group of immune checkpoint blockade cancer therapies, with potential antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity. It is used for the treatment of Merkel cell carcinoma, urothelial carcinoma, and renal cell carcinoma.
